ELLERBE — On Monday, June 1, Mayor Lee Berry and the Ellerbe Town Council unanimously adopted a Flag Day Proclamation sponsored by the General Henry William Harrington Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The proclamation recognizes June 14 as Flag Day and encourages residents to honor the anniversary of the 1777 adoption of the United States flag.
The proclamation reflects the spirit of Flag Day itself—a moment when Americans pause to remember that the flag is more than fabric. As noted in the chapter’s Flag Day message, the flag has long served as a symbol of hope, sacrifice, unity, and the ongoing promise of freedom. From battlefields to classrooms,
from Olympic podiums to quiet cemeteries, the American flag has accompanied generations of citizens and servicemembers through triumph, hardship, and national renewal.
Chapter Regent Melissa Wall expressed gratitude for the Town’s support and emphasized the importance of this observance as the nation approaches America 250, the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.
“Flag Day invites us to reflect on what binds us together as Americans,” Wall said. “The flag is one of the few symbols that still has the power to unite us. We are thankful to Mayor Berry and the Ellerbe Town Council for helping us honor that legacy and for encouraging the community to celebrate the values our flag represents.”
The chapter hopes the proclamation will inspire residents to display the American flag on June 14 as a sign of gratitude for the freedoms enjoyed today and the sacrifices made by generations before us. The DAR encourages families to share the story of the flag with children and grandchildren, ensuring that its meaning continues to evolve with each new generation.
