RICHMOND COUNTY — A Richmond County man has been charged in connection with a copper theft incident that resulted in the death of another man, according to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.
Allan Joseph Subero, 42, of the Cordova community, was arrested May 13 by investigators with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division. He is charged with felony injury to personal property to obtain nonferrous metals resulting in serious bodily injury.
The charge stems from an incident that occurred between the late evening of May 2 and the early morning hours of May 3.
According to the sheriff’s office, Corey Shane Dorsey, 41, of the Cordova community, suffered life-threatening injuries while he and Subero were allegedly dismantling and cutting a large AT&T phone cable near the intersection of Ledbetter Street and Rosylan Road in an attempt to steal copper.
Investigators said a telephone pole installed in 1963 broke at its base as the cable was being pulled, striking Dorsey. Dorsey was transported from the scene to Subero’s home before emergency services were called. He was later taken to FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond and then transferred to UNC Chapel Hill’s Trauma Center, where he died several days later from his injuries.
The sheriff’s office said Subero also faces a separate felony charge of injury to personal property to obtain nonferrous metals in an unrelated case.
“Investigators are actively researching Subero and his various aliases and anticipate additional charges as the investigation continues,” said Sheriff Gulledge in a media release.
According to court records, Subero made his first court appearance June 1 and is scheduled to appear in court again June 11. Court records list his name as Allan Joseph Subero.
Subero received an additional $100,000 secured bond on the charges filed last Friday.
