ROCKINGHAM – During Senior Night for Raider Baseball on Thursday, April 30, tragedy struck when a toddler fan was struck with a foul ball. Medical attention was required, an ambulance being called to care for the toddler. No updates have been given as to the identity of the injured or the extent of the injuries.
“The scoreboard stops mattering the moment anyone is hurt — player or fan,” read a social media post from Our Raider Life.
Due to the injury, the Varsity game was stopped and rescheduled.
The JV Raiders came in with an overall record of 10-6, while the JV Patriots came in with a record of 15-3-1. They had previously been defeated by the Patriots on April 28, with a score of 7-6. The JV boys could not overcome the Pats, falling again with a score of 7-6. Freshman Jackson Parsons would go 2-for-3 with two hits and one run. Sophomore Kerick Hairston would have one run, one RBI, and one stolen base. Freshman Colton Nelson would pitch the entire five innings, allowing seven hits and seven runs (none of which were earned). Nelson struck out one of the Patriot players.
Before the incident, Richmond won 4-0. However, the game only went through two-and-a-half innings because they stopped it after the injury. The Varsity Raiders have beaten the Patriots every time they have met this season, with scores of 11-0, 6-5, and 4-0. Sophomore Devin Haynes had one RBI. Senior Jacob Veach had one run, Senior Maddox Locklear had one run and one hit and Senior Caden Nolan had one run and one hit.
The Varsity Game was rescheduled for May 1.
