ROCKINGHAM — Two Richmond County men are facing multiple felony charges after authorities said they cut and sold copper wire, while a separate case involves a Rockingham woman charged in incidents spanning multiple jurisdictions.
According to arrest warrants issued by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Charles Joseph Strickland, of Cordova, is accused of cutting telecommunication lines and broadband wires belonging to AT&T on April 16, resulting in about $250,000 in damages. Authorities allege he conspired with Scott Patrick Abendroth, 43, of Hamlet, to sell the copper wire to a scrap metal recycling company for $522.
Strickland is charged with injury to property to obtain nonferrous metals causing damage greater than or equal to $10,000, injuring utility wires or fixtures, conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses, obtaining property by false pretenses, felony larceny and possession of stolen property. He was booked April 17 into the Richmond County Jail under a $25,000 secured bond.
Abendroth is charged with conspiracy to obtain property by false pretenses, obtaining property by false pretenses and possession of stolen goods or property. He was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a $5,000 bond. Both men are scheduled to appear in court May 7.
In a separate case, a Rockingham woman is facing numerous charges across Richmond and Anson counties.
According to an arrest warrant issued by the Hamlet Police Department, Ashanti Moneak Dumas, 23, of Rockingham, is accused of attempting to murder a victim, conspiring with two unknown male subjects to rob the victim, and allegedly attempting to take “unknown items” from the individual’s pants pockets.
Authorities also allege that on April 15, Dumas and two unknown male subjects conspired to burglarize a residence in Anson County, resulting in the victim being injured, while the two male subjects were left behind at the scene.
On April 18, deputies with the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Dumas to serve felony warrants, but she failed to comply, leading to a pursuit. During the chase, authorities said she was driving 115 mph in a 55 mph zone on U.S. 1.
According to the arrest warrant, Dumas drove a 2015 Ford Taurus into a deputy’s 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe patrol vehicle, causing damage. Additional damage was reported to a cable fence wire at Rockingham Speedway and to a mailbox.
Dumas is facing multiple charges, including:
Hamlet Police Department: Attempted first-degree murder, felony conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury
Anson County Sheriff’s Office: felony conspiracy, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury
Richmond County Sheriff’s Office: fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, assault on a government official or employee, assault with a deadly weapon, speeding, two counts of injury to personal property, injury to real property, having a fictitious or altered title, registration card or tag, giving, lending, or borrowing a license plate, reckless driving with wanton disregard, failure to heed a light or siren, resisting a public officer, a center lane violation, driving left of center and failure to wear a seat belt as a driver
Dumas was booked into the Richmond County Jail under a combined $100,000 secured bond for the Richmond County charges and is being held without bond on charges from the Hamlet Police Department and the Anson County Sheriff’s Office. She is scheduled to appear in court in Anson County on April 27 and in Richmond County on May 7.
