ROCKINGHAM – The Raiders Junior Varsity and Varsity Baseball teams competed in several games this past week, with the JV team coming out with one win and one loss and the Varsity team coming out with two wins.
The Junior Varsity Raiders started the momentum for the teams with a win over the Hoke County Bucks on Friday, April 17. The Raiders came in with an 8-3 overall record and a five game winning streak. On Tuesday, April 14, the JV baseball team had already defeated Hoke County with a score of 8-5. During the Friday game, at the base, Freshman Colton Nelson stood out with two hits and four RBIs. They also competed on Saturday, April 18, but were not able to overcome the Ashley Screaming Eagles. Sophomore Kerick Hairston tried to keep them in the game with two hits and two runs, with Freshman Nelson giving two hits and one RBI. They lost 7-3.
The Varsity Raiders continued the momentum with a win over the Bucks on Friday, as well.
The Varsity Raiders came in with an overall record of 14-4 and a win over the Bucks from Tuesday, April 14. They had defeated the Bucks 4-0 on that Tuesday, giving them a boost going into Friday’s game. At the bat, Senior Jacob Veach contributed two hits, one RBI, and one triple. Maddox Locklear also had one hit, one RBI, and one triple. Richmond had seven walks, which helped them get extra runners on the bases.
Evan Hodges dominated the Bucks at the end, pitching three innings with six strikeouts and zero runs. The Varsity Team also competed on Saturday, April 18, where they beat the Ashley Screaming Eagles 11-0. They had 11 runs on 11 hits. Junior Drew Gause went 3-for-3, with three runs and two RBIs. Devin Haynes went 2-for-3, with five RBIs. Locklear and Caden Nolan also had multiple hits, these four players allowing Richmond to dominate the Screaming Eagles. Locklear also pitched five innings, with three hits and three strickouts. The defense made zero errors, which led to the dominant performance from the Raiders.
Both of Richmond’s baseball teams will look to deaft the Overhills Jaguars in their upcoming games on Friday, April 24. The JV team will start the day at 4:30 p.m., with the Varsity team following at 7:00 p.m. The Jaguars JV team is coming in with a 1-12-1 overall score and the Varsity team is coming in with a 5-12 overall score. The Raiders JV team is coming in with a 9-4 overall score and the Varsity team is coming in with a 15-4 overall score.
