ROCKINGHAM — Residents of Richmond County are set to join a global movement of more than 1 billion people on April 22 to observe the 56th anniversary of Earth Day. Organized under the 2026 theme “Our Power, Our Planet,” local efforts will focus on community-led beautification and the preservation of the region’s diverse natural habitats.
In Richmond County, the milestone will be marked by a series of events and resources designed to engage the public in local environmental protection.
“Our Power, Our Planet is a reminder that environmental progress is sustained by the people,” said a spokesperson for EARTHDAY.ORG, the global coordinator for the holiday.
Local observances and initiatives include:
Richmond County Community Cleanup: The Richmond County Government is partnering with multiple communities to host a “Community Clean Up” event. Residents are encouraged to pick up garbage and participate in neighborhood beautification efforts to keep “Richmond County Beautiful”.
Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge Stewardship: Residents are invited to celebrate the day by visiting the Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge, which offers miles of trails and opportunities for wildlife observation. Local conservation efforts at the refuge emphasize the importance of protecting migratory paths and native biodiversity.
Soil and Water Conservation Programs: The Richmond Soil and Water Conservation District continues its commitment to rural sustainability by providing resources for responsible land management and promoting agricultural practices that protect local water quality.

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million Americans participated in the first “national teach-in on the environment”.
