ROCKINGHAM – The Raiders Varsity Baseball team competed in several home games during the week of Spring Break, coming out with two wins and a loss.
The Raiders started off a busy week on Monday, April 6 with a win over Southern Nash. Both teams came in with a 10-3 overall record and winning streaks. Richmond Senior came in with a winning streak of four games, while Southern Nash came in with a two-win streak. On Thursday, April 2, Richmond Senior had defeated Jack Britt with a close score of 13-12, securing a winning streak of four games. That same day, Southern Nash had a big victory over Southern Wayne with a score of 16-0, securing a winning streak of two games. During the game, Senior Evan Hodges was the best hitter with two hits and three RBIs. Maddox Locklear, Drew Gause, and Caden Nolan also got hits. Devin Haynes pitched most of the game, giving up zero runs and had seven strikeouts. In the end, Richmond Senior took the victory with a score of 4-0, extending their winning streak to five games.
The next day, the Raiders continued their winning streak with a win against West Brunswick. Compared to Richmond’s 11-3 overall record, West Brunswick came in with an overall record of 8-7. The day before, West Brunswick had a large victory over South Stanly, with a score of 13-3 and a winning streak of three games. The Raiders would ultimately end that winning streak and hand the Trojans a loss, with the end score of 6-3. Once again, Senior Hodges showed his hitting skills with two hits and two RBIs. Senior Nolan also got two hits and one RBI on the offense side. On the defensive side of things, Nolan pitched six innings, only allowing one run and striking out 10 times. This extended Richmond’s record to 12-3, with a six-game winning streak.
On Wednesday, April 8, the Raiders suffered a loss to end their winning streak. West Stanly came in with an impressive 16-0 overall record, with a winning streak of 17 games. The Raiders would fall victim to these numbers, with a score of 6-7. Hodges and Nolan would again showcase their strength, with Hodges getting two hits and Nolan getting one hit and one RBI double. Julius Bowden would get a pair of hits and two runs and Drew McCaskill would get a hit and a run as well. Hodges would also showcase his pitching skills, pitching a total of six innings with eight strikeouts and three runs, two of which were earned.
Overall, these three busy days brought Richmond to an overall score of 12-4. The Raiders are set to go against Hoke County twice this week, both of which are Conference games. The Bucks are coming in with an 8-7 overall record and 5-4 conference games record. The current conference score for the Raiders is 8-1. They will host Hoke County on Friday, April 17 at 7 p.m.
