HAMLET — The City of Hamlet will install multiple four-way stops along Spring Street as part of new traffic safety measures.
According to City Manager John Terziu, more than 120 accidents have been reported on Spring Street since 2023.
Terziu said the number of wrecks “made it clear that additional traffic control measures are necessary to improve safety for motorists and pedestrians.”
Terziu said Spring Street “has historically been used as a cut-through route by motorists attempting to bypass BUS 74, which undermines the intent of the corridor’s existing ‘No Thru Trucks’ restrictions and increases traffic volume in residential areas. These changes are intended to slow traffic, discourage cut-through use, and improve overall roadway safety.”
The four intersections on Spring Street that will become four-way stops are Wilmington Street, High Street, Kent Street and Corning Street.
Terziu said signs for the intersections are currently being ordered and will be installed once they are delivered.
“To help ensure a smooth transition, the Hamlet Police Department will have an increased presence in the area during the first few weeks after the signs are installed,” said Terziu. “This will help raise awareness and encourage drivers to adjust to the new traffic pattern.”
Terziu added that the city will install additional no-parking signs in certain areas to “improve visibility and reinforce existing city ordinances, which will further enhance safety along the corridor.”
“Our goal is simple: reduce accidents, improve visibility, slow traffic, and make Spring Street safer for everyone who travels through Hamlet,” Terziu said. “I appreciate the community’s cooperation as we implement these safety improvements and will continue to keep the public informed as progress is made.”
