RICHMOND COUNTY — Richmond County voters selected candidates who will appear on the November ballot during the March 3 primary, according to preliminary results.
In the Republican primary for the Richmond County Board of Commissioners, incumbents Justin Dawkins and Jason Gainey received the most votes. Dawkins received 1,139 votes, followed by Gainey with 1,127.
Also advancing to the November ballot are Laverne Schultz, who received 1,123 votes, and Terry Lewis with 845 votes. They will face Democratic candidates Cameron Wright and Linda Ross, along with unaffiliated candidate Michael Legrand, in the general election.
Robin Roberts received 788 votes, followed by Jesse McQueen with 697, Richard Robinson with 531, James Daniels with 405, Melissa Schoonover with 163 and Tyrannia Ellerbe with 74.
All four Richmond County Board of Education incumbents received enough votes to retain their seats. Daryl Mason led with 2,726 votes, followed by Bobbie Sue Ormsby with 2,659, Cory Satterfield with 2,571 and Scotty Baldwin with 2,479. Challengers Amber Daniels received 1,639 votes and Charles Dulin received 1,452.
Former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper received 758,808 votes statewide in the Democratic primary, including 2,098 in Richmond County. Michael Whatley received 404,199 votes statewide, with 1,287 votes in Richmond County. The two are expected to face each other in the November general election for U.S. Senate.
For district attorney in District 21, incumbent Jamie Adams received 1,186 votes and will advance to the general election. Adams will face Todd G. Scott in November.
In the race for U.S. House District 8, Democrat Colby Watson received 18,205 votes and will face Republican Mark Harris in November.
For the N.C. Court of Appeals, Michael C. Byrne won the Republican primary for Seat 1 and will challenge incumbent John Arrowood. Christine Walczyk won the Democratic primary for Seat 3 and will face Craig Collins.
In Richmond County, 4,651 of 28,334 registered voters cast ballots in this year’s primary.
Results from the March 3 primary are preliminary and will be finalized following certification. The county canvass meeting is scheduled for March 13. The general election will be held Nov. 3.
