Free AARP tax assistance available at Hamlet Senior Center

HAMLET — Residents in Richmond County can receive free tax preparation this season through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program at the Hamlet Senior Center.

The program, open to the community and not limited to seniors, is designed to help low- to moderate-income households complete their taxes with guidance from IRS-certified volunteer preparers.

Service will be offered Thursdays from Feb. 5 through April 9, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Hamlet Senior Center, 102 Veterans Drive. Appointments are required; walk-ins and same-day scheduling will not be accepted.

Scheduling began Friday, Jan. 23. Residents can make an appointment by calling 910-582-7985.

Participants must pick up a single AARP Tax-Aide packet from the senior center, complete all forms at home, and bring all required tax documents to their appointment. Tax returns are prepared by trained volunteers, reviewed with the participant, signed on site, and electronically filed before leaving.

Volunteers will assist with most tax situations, but some complex cases may be referred to other providers. Organizers encourage residents to schedule early, as space is limited.

“This is a free volunteer service through the AARP Foundation,” a press release from the Hamlet Senior Center reads. “Please thank our volunteer tax preparers for their service.”
