HAMLET — A precautionary boil water advisory was issued early Sunday after a leak was identified in Hamlet’s water system.
According to City Manager John Terziu, a water leak was discovered, prompting the advisory to be issued “out of an abundance of caution” while crews work to resolve the issue.
Terziu said the advisory is not mandatory and that there is no confirmed contamination as of 3 a.m. Repair crews are addressing the leak, which has required “the shutdown of water storage tanks to prevent potential contamination” and “to protect the integrity of the water system.”
“Whenever pressure is lost or system integrity is compromised, state and federal regulations require issuing a Boil Water Advisory as a precaution,” said Terziu in a press release.
Until the advisory is lifted, residents are encouraged to boil all tap water used for:
• Drinking
• Cooking
• Making ice
• Brushing teeth
• Washing dishes (or use bottled water)
• Bring water to a rolling boil for at least one (1) minute, then allow it to cool.
According to Terziu, Public Works crews are actively addressing the issue, and water quality testing will be conducted once the system is stabilized. The advisory will remain in effect until laboratory results confirm the water is safe.
“Protecting public health is our top priority, and we will lift the advisory as soon as it is safe to do so,” Terziu said.
