ELLERBE — The Derby Fire Department hosted its third annual Cookies with Santa event, featuring a record-breaking turnout and a visit from the Grinch.
Children had the chance to take pictures with Santa and the Grinch, decorate Christmas cookies and drink hot chocolate.
“The community’s growing and it’s so much joy to see the kids come in and enjoy the Christmas magic and get to talk to Santa and have our special guest, the Grinch,” said Connie Green, secretary and events coordinator for the Derby Fire Department. “It just makes it more fun. It’s what Christmas is all about — being with the community and making the kids happy.”
Although the department does not have any upcoming events, members hope to host more in the new year.
“We’re hoping in the next year, in 2026, we’re hoping to bring more community events to the area, now that the area is growing so rapidly, we’re wanting to involve the community more and recruit more volunteers. That is our New Year’s resolution— recruit more volunteers,” Green said.
“We appreciate all of the support from the community and the county,” said Fire Chief David Poland.
Green echoed Poland’s sentiments, expressing gratitude for the support.
“With the price of everything going up like it is, the outpouring support from Richmond County and our community has been amazing. We are super thankful for the support of our department. We’re looking forward to growing more in 2026 with the community. That’s really what it’s about — supporting the community and the county that we live in,” Green said.
