RICHMOND COUNTY — Prosecutors stated they would not seek the death penalty against Connor Williams, 17, who is charged with the death of Gabriel Ennis, a junior firefighter with Cordova Fire & Rescue. A “Rule 24” hearing was held for Williams on Thursday on the decision.
Williams is charged with first-degree murder in Ennis’ death. Police say he shot and killed Ennis on June 22 at a home on Wallace Road near Ellerbe.
A murder indictment was returned against Williams in August. The North Carolina General Assembly enacted a law in 2024 that automatically charges 16 and 17-year-olds as adults for felonies such as murder.
Williams’ next court date is scheduled for Jan. 5.
Cordova Fire & Rescue issued a tribute to Ennis after his death, commending his service.
“Gabe Ennis was the kind of individual any agency would be proud to have on their roster,” the department said. “From the moment he walked through our doors, Gabe was eager to learn and embraced every bit of knowledge shared by his fellow members.”
A procession was held for Ennis by Richmond County firefighters to honor his life.
“No words can fully express the pain we are feeling today,” the fire department said. “This tragic loss leaves a hole in our hearts that can never be filled.”
Ennis’ family held a back-to-school supplies drive in August to honor his caring spirit.
