ROCKINGHAM – At its November meeting held at the First Methodist Church in Rockingham, the General Henry William Harrington Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR), proudly honored Mayor John Hutchinson with the DAR America 250! Commendation Medal and Certificate.
This prestigious recognition is awarded to non-DAR individuals or groups who have made truly exceptional efforts to honor Revolutionary War Patriots and educate others about their service and sacrifice. Mayor Hutchinson was nominated by the chapter for his outstanding civic leadership and his authorship of No Ordinary Lives: A History of Richmond County, NC 1750–1900.
Mayor Hutchinson’s 320-page historical work offers a detailed and well-documented account of Richmond County’s development from its colonial beginnings through the turn of the 20th century. The book explores the lives of both ordinary and prominent residents, weaving together political, social, and economic narratives that shaped the county’s identity. It addresses pivotal events such as the Revolutionary War, Civil War, and Reconstruction, while including genealogical references, maps, illustrations, and endnotes. This resource has become invaluable to historians, family researchers, and community members alike, highlighting resilience and transformation while connecting local experiences to broader trends in North Carolina and the American South.
Mayor Hutchinson shared his gratitude, stating: “Helping people connect with our community’s history is one of my greatest joys. The DAR continues to be an invaluable service organization in our area, and I am truly honored by this recognition. I deeply appreciate all the DAR does for our community.”
