ROCKINGHAM — A Wadesboro man accused of firing at officers during a chase was captured Tuesday by the Anson County Sheriff’s Office. Scotty Roy Hills, 43, was transported to the Rockingham Police Department for processing before being placed in the Richmond County Jail under no bond.
“The Rockingham Police Department would like to thank the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Anson County Sheriff’s Office, and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) for their assistance in this case,” said the RPD in a media release.
No further details are being released at this time, as the case remains under active investigation.
The incident began Sept. 7 around 11:30 p.m. when Rockingham Police attempted to stop a blue Chevrolet Venture van on Mill Road after a Flock alert flagged the vehicle. Officers said Hills refused to stop, leading them on a chase through Rockingham and into Anson County.
Deputies with the Anson County Sheriff’s Office deployed stop sticks on U.S. Highway 74 near Harrington Road, disabling the vehicle. Police reported that Hills struck a Rockingham Police car before coming to a stop.
Authorities said Hills fled into nearby woods, where he displayed a firearm and fired several shots at pursuing officers before disappearing deeper into the area.
The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the search with K-9 units, along with Polkton Police and the N.C. State Highway Patrol Aviation Unit.
Hills faces charges, including one count of fleeing to elude arrest with a motor vehicle, one count of assault with a deadly weapon on an official, three counts of assault on law enforcement with a firearm, and one count of resisting a public officer.
