ROCKINGHAM – The General Henry William Harrington Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR) proudly invites citizens of Richmond County to reflect on the enduring significance of the United States Constitution during the annual observance of Constitution Week, held September 17–23.
Constitution Week was established in 1955 when DAR petitioned Congress to dedicate this week to honoring the foundational document of American governance. The resolution was adopted, and on August 2, 1956, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law as Public Law #915. The celebration’s goals are to encourage the study of the historical events that led to the framing of the Constitution, to remind the public of its role in shaping our way of life, and to emphasize every citizen’s responsibility to protect and preserve it.
“We are honored to bring Constitution Week to life through educational outreach and community partnerships,” said Melissa Wall, Regent of the General Henry William Harrington Chapter. “This year, we’ve collaborated with the Sandhills Regional Library System to create vibrant displays at the Kemp-Suggs Library in Ellerbe, the Thomas H. Leath Memorial Library in Rockingham, and the Hamlet Public Library. We’ve also partnered with the Rankin Museum of American Heritage to feature a Constitution-themed exhibit. Local schools and businesses have joined us by proudly displaying Constitution Week posters.”
The chapter extends heartfelt thanks to local government officials who have issued Constitution Week Proclamations, helping to raise awareness and foster civic pride. Special appreciation goes to Mayor Karla Bostick of Hoffman, Mayor Brenda Capel of Ellerbe, Mayor John Hutchinson of Rockingham, Mayor Amy Guinn of Hamlet, the Richmond County Board of Commissioners, and Senator David Craven for their leadership and support in recognizing this important observance.
