ELLERBE — Last Saturday, the Derby Fire Department hosted its annual Cookies with Santa event, a festive gathering that brought holiday cheer to the community. Santa Claus was joined by special guests Sparky the Fire Dog and the Grinch, captivating attendees of all ages.
The event, organized by Fire Chief David Poland, Tammy Poland, and Connie Green, provided an opportunity for families to come together and celebrate the season.
“It’s a way to say Merry Christmas to our community, let people come in and meet the firefighters and meet our chief,” said organizer Connie Green. When asked how long he’s been the chief, Poland jokingly replied, “Too long.” Green added, “It’s just a way to celebrate Christmas.”
Children and families enjoyed a variety of activities, including cookie decorating, sipping homemade hot chocolate, and creating Christmas ornaments. “We’ve done cookie decorating, served homemade hot chocolate, and made Christmas ornaments with the kids. It’s all about celebrating the Christmas season with the community,” Green shared.
Santa’s special guests added an extra layer of excitement to the festivities. Sparky the Fire Dog and the Grinch were on hand to spread joy and entertain children.
Green highlighted the positive response from attendees. “Everybody loves it,” she said. “I think this is something everyone’s going to look forward to for years to come.”
Tammy Poland, one of the Cookies with Santa organizers, shared her favorite part of the event. “It’s the kids,” she said. “Their reaction to Santa and the Grinch.”
The celebration also showcased the fire department’s growth and its efforts to connect with residents. “We’ve got a lot of firetrucks, and we’re growing by leaps and bounds,” Green noted.
This year’s Cookies with Santa was a success, leaving families eagerly anticipating next year’s festivities. It was a heartwarming way to support the community and show gratitude to the residents who make it special.
