HAMLET — Who knew old water bottles and cardboard could make such striking works of art?

After studying American glassblower Dale Chihuly, Hamlet Middle School students were inspired to create their own version of a chandelier. Upcycling water bottles to simulate glass and cardboard tubing to replace metal armatures, the 53 students created two sculptress entitled “Frozen Color” and “Bright Lights.”

As for their process, the two teams began by using X-Acto knives to cut holes in the top of each bottle. They then painted each bottle a solid color and added designs, increasing their aesthetic appeal.

Scissors were also used to cut each bottle into spirals that were then attached to the armature using a staple gun. Both pieces have been installed and hang down into the Hamlet Middle School cafeteria. A plaque with the title and artists’ names will also appear below each piece.
