ROCKINGHAM — Seniors Angela Chen and Austin Patrick have been selected to represent Richmond Senior High School for North Carolina State University’s Park Scholarship process.

The Park Scholarship is one of the most prestigious undergraduate merit scholarships in the nation. Valued at $100,000 for in-state students, it is awarded on the basis of outstanding accomplishments and potential in scholarship, leadership, service and character.

The scholarship includes a stipend for the purchase of a personal computer as well as funding for academic enrichment activities, special trips, retreats, seminars and grant opportunities.

About 35 scholarships will be awarded this year to outstanding high school seniors for undergraduate study in any discipline at N.C. State. Chen and Patrick will now advance to the next level of competition.

The Park Scholarship was established in 1996 for the late Roy H. Park, a 1931 N.C. State alumnus. To date, 16 classes of Park scholars have both graduated and built a vibrant alumni network, according to the university.

Park was founder and president of Park Communications, which owned the Richmond County Daily Journal from 1989 to 1995. A North Carolina native, Park died of a heart attack in 1993 at age 83.
