LAURINBURG — A man accused of raping two women was picked up by police after turning himself over to mental health officials, according to authorities.

Tarus Flowers, 37, was charged by Laurinburg police after seeking psychological help Friday morning. Police did not name the facility where Flowers turned himself in.

Flowers was jailed under a $500,000 secured bond at the Scotland County jail.

Warrants for his arrest were issued Tuesday for two counts of second-degree rape. Police say Flowers broke into a James Street home on Sunday and assaulting two women, including a victim who is handicapped.

Flowers was also charged with two counts of second-degree kidnapping, breaking and entering and assault on a handicapped person.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.

Flowers has an extensive criminal history dating back to 1999 with convictions that include indecent exposure, assault on a female, assault by pointing a gun, violation of a protective order, DWI, larceny and trespassing, according to N.C. Division of Adult Correction records.
