HAMLET — Volunteers from local search and rescue teams located the body of Betty Billingsley, 90, around 10:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

Pineland Resources Inc., The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Hamlet Fire & Rescue, Richmond and Cordova Fire & Rescue participated in the search that began at 9:00 a.m.

Detective Gary Carter, who was in charge of the search, said the result was unfortunate but called it a successful search. He said a K-9 from CUE Center for Missing Persons located the body. Billingsley’s family was notified once the search was over.

“I’ve had numerous people call me personally, that said, ‘Hey, I used to give her rides to the store and she’s a sweet old lady and if I can help in anyway here’s my number,’” Carter said.

Billingsley was last seen in late February near her home on Ridgeview Drive.

Carter thanked the individuals who contributed water to the volunteers.

There isn’t any suspicion of foul play, but Carter said it hasn’t been ruled out. The investigation is ongoing.
