ROCKINGHAM — The Earth Day clean up set to take place this weekend all over Richmond County has been postponed until May 1 due to weather.

“A decision has been made to POSTPONE the clean up date of the 24th due to the 100% chance of rain showers,” said Aging Services Director Jacqueline Welch in an email. “We will hope for clearer skies on Saturday, May 1st.”

Welch added advice for any would-be participants who can’t do so on May 1 but still want to help. She said that, after your group does their pick up on their chosen day, call Bryan Leggett at 910-206-2252 to arrange for pick up of the trash, or take the trash to the Richmond County Landfill (not to a dumpster) at 191 Walter Kelly Road, Rockingham, NC 28379.

The landfill’s hours are Monday- Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturday 8 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. and closed on Sunday. She said to tell the attendant the trash is for Earth Day or “community involvement.”

“We are keeping up with how many bags and pounds that has been collected by the community,” Welch.

The event planned for April 24 represented a county-wide partnership, between local governments who have been engaged in legal battles for over a year, between private businesses and between groups of community members to clean up the county and change the culture around litter.
