Little-Young crowned queen of debutante cotillion

The young women of the 57th Annual Debutante Cotillion recently waltzed the night away to the theme “I Am a Conqueror.”

The Alpha Lambda Chapter of Alpha Pi Chi National Sorority held the ball in the auditorium of West Rockingham Elementary School, welcoming the debutantes’ family and friends.

The debutantes entertained the audience with dance and narrative as their final salute before making the transition to college. They spoke of their career aspirations, college choices, and appreciation for family and friends.

The debutantes are 2018 graduates of Richmond Senior High School, West Montgomery High School and the Triad Math and Science Academy of Greensboro.

Zaria Bronte Little-Young was crowned queen of the debutante cotillion. She is the daughter of James and Cherie Young. Zaria was escorted by Kaleb Douglas and sponsored by Carol Chambers. She plans to attend Winston-Salem State University in the fall.

Last year’s queen — Maggi Chambers, a sophomore at Howard University — returned to crown the queen.

The queen’s court included Jordyn Starr Horne, maid of honor, the daughter of Antonio Horne and Tawnya Washington. She is a 2018 graduate of Richmond Senior High School and will attend Pembroke State University in the fall. Jordyn’s escort was Shamad Anderson. Her sponsor was her grandmother, Annie Pratt.

Keyvana Resper-Robinson was first attendant. She is the daughter of Denisha Robinson and a 2018 graduate of the Triad Math and Science Academy of Greensboro. She plans to attend Catawba College. Daryn Mason was her escort and her sponsor, Patricia McCoy.

Second attendant was Sharika Justina Calloway. Her parents are the Rev. Jessie and Sherry Calloway. Sharika is a 2018 graduate of West Montgomery High School and plans to attend Montgomery Community College. Her escort was Rodney Williams Jr. and her sponsor, Doris Henry Cuthrell.

Courtney Unique Smith was third attendant. She is the daughter of Stephanie Baldwin and a 2018 graduate of Richmond Senior High School, Courtney has chosen North Carolina A&T State University to further her education. Her escort was Antonio Diggs and her sponsor, Patricia McCoy.

The other debutantes in the cotillion made up the Honor Court:

• Natassia Michelle Cooke is the daughter of Fernando Cooke and Latoya Little. Her escort was Jaylon Morrison and her sponsor, Doris Henry Cuthrell. Her college choice is Montgomery Community College.

• Jasmine Ann Pemberton, a graduate of West Montgomery High School, is the daughter of Kerry Armstrong. Her escort was Cod Montez Pemberton and her sponsor, Doris Henry Cuthrell. She plans to attend Montgomery Community College.

• Zakaya Sha’Bree McDonald is the daughter of Donnie McDonald and Debra Hines. Delon Wall was her escort and her sponsor, Annie Pratt. She will attend Winston-Salem State University.

• Nataijah Kadijah Aliyah McAuley is the daughter of Sharon McAuley and a 2018 graduate of West Montgomery High School. Abdul McAuley escorted Nataijah, and Doris Henry Cuthrell sponsored her. Nataijah will attend North Carolina Central University.

The Debutante Cotillion raises money to help young women with education beyond high school and provide cultural experiences throughout the year. This year, $21,000 in scholarships and educational awards was presented.

Other awards presented were:

• Miss Congeniality — Courtney Smith.

• Mr. Congeniality — Daryn Mason.

• Citizenship — Natassia Cooke.

• Talent — Zaria Little-Young.

• Miss All-About the Business — Zaria Little-Young.

• Highest Achievement Award — Zakaya McDonald.

Sorority members are Carol Chambers, Doris Henry Cuthrell, Delores Foreman, Doretha Jefferson, Alice Baker Little-Livingston, Patricia McCoy, Sabrina McDonald, Cynthia Northcutt, Annie Pratt, Janet Stroman, Marcella Townsend and Wenonia Wall.

Charter members are Catherine Blackwell, Gloria Mask and Ruth Watkins.

Doris Henry Cuthrell was program event chair. Leon Gatewood provided the music, Christopher Bradley choreographed the dance, and James Tillman served as photographer and videographer.
