Camp is a gift that helps shape a child’s decision-making skills, team-working ability and self-esteem. Camp offers friends for a lifetime, adventures in a safe nurturing environment and unforgettable activities like canoeing, archery, rock wall climbing, swimming and ropes courses.
Richmond County 4-H is proudly supported by the United Way of Richmond County and through this partnership is able to assist kids financially in attending camp.
Richmond County 4-H Summer Fun consists of a series of educational activities designed to make the most of summer vacation by encouraging youth to learn with productive activities that are FUN! There is overnight camping, day camping, citizenship, public speaking, nutrition education, sewing and much, much more!
To participate in 4-H Summer Fun, youth do not have to be actively enrolled 4-H members. 4-H Summer Fun is open to all Richmond County youth ages 5-18 depending on the camp.
During the 2016 4-H Summer Fun, many day and overnight camps will be offered. Local day camps start at $15 and children should wear comfortable clothing for lots of movement and getting dirty! Day campers are provided snacks, water and juice daily, but will require a bagged lunch most days.
This year, the focus of the North Carolina 4-H is health. So, to kick the summer off, there will be a “Farm to Fork” day camp to teach youth about where the food on their table comes from and how to prepare it.
After many adventures throughout the week, on the last day of camp there will be a Food Challenge Cook-Off based loosely on the television show “Chopped.” Participants will be on teams and cook with mystery ingredients, then present their dish to a panel of judges.
In addition, 4-H will be offering a wonderful beginners’ sewing camp for youth ages 10-18. This camp has always been popular with kids and we would love to teach your young person how to sew!
Sewing provides the opportunity for young people to experience a sense of accomplishment associated with completing a project. It also provides an opportunity for youth to understand textiles, construction techniques and design principles as well as developing hand-eye coordination. In this camp, participants do not need to have any previous knowledge of sewing.
Overnight camps range in price from $100 to 300 per week which includes transportation to and from camp, meals, lodging, $15 to spend in the camp store and a camp T-shirt. Thanks to the United Way, Richmond County 4-H Summer Fun has several scholarships to offer students who may not be able to participate otherwise.
When applying for scholarships, students will be asked to write a short essay on why they would like to attend the chosen camp and why they are interested in 4-H.
Camp registration will begin April 18 and spots fill up quickly! All classes are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Rarely do camps get canceled or changed, but parents will be notified with any changes as soon as they occur. Field trips associated with day camps can be changed or canceled due to inclement weather.
