Clark Equipment was not an union organized plant.
It is true that a union tried to organize the place during the late seventies, but that attempt failed. The plant shut down in 1986, so the union attempt had nothing to do with it.
That said, I totally agree that the time of unions has long passed. The competition from low wage third world countries, along with our government’s pro outsourcing policies have made unions rather obsolete.
