Jerry Wayne Avant, 67, of Rockingham, N.C., went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013, at Hospice Haven in Rockingham.

Avant was born Jan. 3, 1947, in Richmond County, a son of Frances Evelyn Ingram Avant and the late Oscar Allen Avant. He served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force. He attended Hopewell Independent Baptist Church and had retired from Britthaven of Hamlet.

In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his wife, Yon Suk Yi Avant; son, Jerry Yi Avant; granddaughter Kailee Birdsong; and siblings, Richard Avant and Pat Lamar.

Surviving are his daughter, Frances Greene (Bryan) of Rockingham; his mother, Frances Avant of Rockingham; grandchildren, Brittany Birdsong, Joshua Greene and Peyton Greene; great-grandchild, Talon Benoist; brother, Floyd Avant of Pilot Mountain, N.C.; and sister, Jeanette McRae of Rockingham.

The family will see friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at his mother’s home.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday at Hopewell Independent Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park.
