MEBANE, N.C. (AP) — A 77-year-old woman has been charged in the hit and run death of a pedestrian in Mebane.

Local outlets report Barbara Bigelow Wyatt of Greensboro turned herself in Friday night on charges of felony hit and run and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle. She was jailed under a $250,000 secured bond pending a court appearance on Monday.

Authorities say 23-year-old Christopher Scott Askey was hit around 6:45 p.m. Sept. 4. He died at the hospital the next day. Police say Askey was crossing the street in the crosswalk when he was hit by a vehicle that fled the scene.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Wyatt had an attorney.
