WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Winston-Salem police say they have arrested a man who they say filed a false report of a clown sighting.

A statement from police sent to local media outlets said 24-year-old David Armstrong called police just before 3 a.m. Friday and reported that someone dressed as a clown had knocked on the window at his residence.

According to police, Armstrong said he chased the clown into some nearby woods. After an investigation, police said Armstrong admitted making up the story. He is charged with filing a false police report.

Armstrong is in the Forsyth County jail under a $500 bond. It’s not known if he has an attorney.

Police said another report of a person dressed as a clown attempting to lure children into the woods also appears to be false.
