NC governor: Coastal residents should watch tropical system

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina’s governor is encouraging coastal residents to keep a close eye on the weather this week as a tropical system could affect the state.

Gov. Pat McCrory said in a news release Sunday that the system located about 400 miles southeast of Cape Hatteras is expected to strengthen slightly into a tropical storm over the next few days. It could cause locally heavy rain, more rip currents and higher waves later this week.

The storm isn’t expected to pose a major threat to North Carolina, but McCrory advises residents to stay alert in case the track changes.

McCrory reminded residents to discuss their emergency plans and update supply kits.

Public Safety Secretary Frank Perry said state emergency management officials are coordinating with local officials to ensure they have what they need.
