EFLAND, N.C. (AP) — A spokesman for the Orange County Schools says a middle school student has died days after suffering breathing difficulties at football practice.

Spokesman Seth Stephens told local media outlets that 13-year-old Frederick Seymour had breathing problems during practice on Monday at Gravelly Hill Middle School in Efland, about 50 miles west of Raleigh.

Stephens said the teenager was taken by ambulance to a hospital, but developed additional complications en route to the hospital. Seymour died on Friday.

Grief counselors were dispatched to the school for students and staff. Extracurricular activities, including Friday night’s football practice, were cancelled.
