COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley is hoping to give a boost to neighboring Republican Gov. Pat McCrory by campaigning with him in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
Haley’s office confirms she will attend a reception Thursday benefiting McCrory, who is in a tight re-election battle against Attorney General Roy Cooper.
Earlier this year, McCrory signed a law requiring transgender people to use public bathrooms according to their biological sex, prompting a national backlash. Haley helped defeat a similar proposal in South Carolina she called unnecessary. But she declined to criticize McCrory at the time, saying he did “what he thought was right.”
Haley and McCrory also differ on Donald Trump.
Haley has publicly criticized the Republican presidential nominee, while McCrory joined Trump at a campaign rally in North Carolina last month.
Next month, Haley is headlining a fundraiser in Atlanta supporting six Republican women, her office said.
The Sept. 16 luncheon sponsored by the Winning Women Victory Committee supports four congressional incumbents, including Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire, and two U.S. House candidates, including Liz Cheney. The daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney easily won the Republican primary earlier this month for the Wyoming seat once held by her father.
