WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — Three people have been rescued after their 20-foot boat became disabled in Pamlico Sound near Hobucken.

The Coast Guard reports that the boaters called for help about 1 a.m. Saturday. When a Coast Guard crew found them about an hour later, waves were breaking over the bow of their aluminum skiff.

The crew towed the skiff and took the man and two women to Hobucken. The Coast Guard did not identify the boaters.

Petty Officer 2nd Class J.S. Tyus says the boaters were smart to anchor near a navigational aid because it helped the crew find them.

But he noted they were relying on a cellphone to communicate, and its battery power was running low.

Tyus encourages boaters to have a marine radio on board.
