SPRING LAKE, N.C. (AP) — Spring Lake Police Chief Troy McDuffie is retiring following a 30-year law enforcement career, the last seven spent rebuilding the police force in the Cumberland County town of about 13,000 people.
When McDuffie took the Spring Lake job in 2009, the department had lost most of its arrest powers in the aftermath of leadership problems and two officers had been charged with corruption.
Now the department’s full powers have been restored and a department that once had eight officers now has 35.
The 52-year-old McDuffie told local media outlets that he plans to retire Dec. 1. McDuffie says it’s been an honor to serve Spring Lake.
He says it’s time for a new generation of law enforcement leadership.
