FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — The Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office says an anonymous donor has given the department $10,000 to buy bulletproof vests for deputies.

Department spokesman Sgt. Sean Swain said Friday that the donation, which was made last month by a Fayetteville family, will help equip deputies with higher quality vests.

Swain said the donors stipulated that their identity remain a secret, and that the family that made the donation hoped that others would be encouraged to make donation as well.

Swain told The Fayetteville Observer that the sheriff’s office is replacing bulletproof vests for 290 deputies. He said he could not estimate the cost of the new vests because the purchase has not gone out for bids.

He also said the new vests would stop rifle rounds, as opposed to the current vests.
