NEW BERN, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in Craven County say the former administrator of a women’s medical practice has been accused of stealing nearly $900,000.

Local media outlets report 61-year-old Betty Mallard has been indicted on six felony counts of embezzlement. She is out of jail on a $250,000 bond, and it’s not known whether she has an attorney. Each count carries a prison sentence of up to eight years upon conviction. As a condition of her bond, Mallard is required to surrender her passport and not leave the state.

District Attorney Scott Thomas told The Sun Journal of New Bern (http://bit.ly/2aTLpEo ) that Mallard turned herself in after she was notified about a grand jury indictment on Monday.

Officials say the embezzlement, totaling $893,157, dates back to September 2005 and continued through June 2015.
