LAKE WACCAMAW, N.C. (AP) — The body of a 16-year-old girl who went missing on Lake Waccamaw has been recovered.

News agencies report Lake Waccamaw Police Chief Scott Hyatt says rescue crews located the unidentified teenager’s body Tuesday night.

Hyatt says the girl was on a boat in the lake with a group of friends that afternoon. He says the teenager was sitting on the edge near the back when she slipped off and fell into the water.

Crews from multiple agencies responded quickly after being notified of the incident.

Hyatt says it appears the teenager drowned. She was not wearing a life jacket.

Officials say they were still working Tuesday night to notify the girl’s family.
