Husband of state senator indicted for rape, extortion

HALIFAX, N.C. (AP) — The State Bureau of Investigation is confirming that a Halifax County probation officer who is married to a North Carolina state senator has been indicted on multiple counts of rape and extortion.

WITN-TV in Greenville reports ( that the SBI says 50-year-old Maud Ingram of Henrico was indicted on seven counts of first-degree rape and seven counts of extortion.

Ingram was arrested on Sept. 18, 2015, on charges including attempted second-degree rape, felony obstruction of justice and failing to make reports and discharge other duties. Authorities say the victims in those charges were probationers.

Ingram is the husband of state Sen. Erica Smith-Ingram, who represents Bertie, Chowan, Edgecombe, Hertford, Martin, Northampton, Tyrrell and Washington counties.
