WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — The Wilmington Police Department hosted a public forum to let citizens know what their rights are when confronted by authorities.

Local news outlets report that dozens of people attended Wednesday night’s forum at Union Missionary Baptist Church to get answers from officers.

Authorities discussed the rights that people are entitled to and gave attendees advice on what to do if they’re ever stopped for questioning or if a law enforcement official comes to a person’s home.

Police also told people that if an officer doesn’t act the way he or she should, a person is advised to first listen and comply with the official and then file a complaint.

Assistant District Attorney Connie Jordan says it’s necessary to have these conversations to know how to get through difficult situations.
