PHOENIX (AP) — Phoenix police say a North Carolina homicide suspect who had been barricaded in an apartment for hours has been found dead with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police identified the suspect found dead late Wednesday as 26-year-old Jason Earl Armstrong and say he was sought in a homicide at Fort Bragg, an Army base in North Carolina.

Phoenix police say officers responded to the area of the apartment in west Phoenix to assist the FBI about 3:30 p.m. after the suspect was spotted and ran into the apartment.

Police negotiated with the suspect but he was found dead alone inside the apartment after hours of negotiations.

Police said the cause of death will be determined by a medical examiner.

Some residents were evacuated during the incident.
