Savannah hopes name of new team has a peel: Savannah Bananas

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Savannah’s new baseball team will be known as the Savannah Bananas in the Coastal Plain League, a summer collegiate league with teams in Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia that will play its home games at Grayson Stadium.

The Savannah Morning News reports (http://bit.ly/1THxl01) that Bananas beat out four other finalists in a contest to name the team.

The newspaper reports that The Bananas will play 24 home games in the Coastal Plain league, with the home opener set for June 2 against Lexington County, South Carolina.

The team will have a shorter schedule than the former Savannah Sand Gnats — a Class A South Atlantic League affiliate of the New York Mets who played their final game in September before moving to Columbia, South Carolina.
