NEW YORK (AP) — Some parents want to get outside the “pink for girls, truck motifs for boys” parameters when it comes to dressing their kids.

They’re finding that options for back-to-school shopping are still limited — but are growing. Some big retailers are making small changes to their offerings, while some frustrated parents have started their own small companies to make the kinds of clothes they want.

Kristin Higgins of Little Rock, Arkansas, says her daughter was told navy blue sneakers were “boy shoes,” and she tries to teach her kids, “There are no boy colors. There are no girl colors.”

Retail analyst Marshal Cohen says more has changed for girls than boys, but most children’s clothing is still gender-specific. He doesn’t expect large-scale change until the next generation has children.
