BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union is reaching out to Morocco, saying it stands ready to allay concerns over trade rights after the North African monarchy suspended contacts.
An EU statement on Friday said “we are ready to provide clarification and additional reassurances to address Morocco’s concerns so that contact and cooperation can be fully re-established as soon as possible.”
Morocco made the move after an EU court ruling went in favor of a separatist group long despised by Rabat.
The Western Sahara separatist Polisario Front had challenged a fisheries and agriculture agreement between the two and the European Court of Justice ruled in its favor in December.
Morocco’s government on Thursday slammed the judgment as “highly political.”
The EU said it was still evaluating the implications of Morocco’s move.
