PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A congressman from New York is pushing to shift about 150 square miles of federal waters in Long Island Sound to the control of New York and Rhode Island.

But Rhode Island officials say no one asked them and they aren’t interested anyway. Connecticut officials and fishermen are also up in arms because they didn’t have input, either, even though the state’s fishermen fish there.

Rep. Lee Zeldin is a Republican who wants to open the area to striped bass fishing and restore local control to fishery management. Striped bass fishing is allowed in state waters but banned in the federal area.

He introduced a bill to change the boundary. Connecticut’s entire congressional delegation opposes it.

U.S. Rep. David Cicilline (sis-uh-LEE’-nee), a Rhode Island Democrat, agrees removing federal jurisdiction doesn’t make sense.
