Marguerite Emerson Hutchinson, 92, went to her heavenly home on Sunday, July 1, 2012.

She was born in Rockingham, N.C. on September 28, 1919, daughter of the late Ralph Benjamin & Alma Covington Hutchinson.

Marguerite attended Richmond County schools, graduated from East Carolina University with a double major in mathematics and French, earned a master’s degree in mathematics from UNC – Chapel Hill, and received a law degree from the University of Connecticut. While attending law school she worked as an underwriter for Traveler’s Insurance Company. Marguerite was admitted to the practice of law in Connecticut and Vermont and taught high school mathematics for nineteen years in Connecticut and Florida. She was a real estate attorney in Londonderry, Vermont for a number of years between her teaching careers.

Marguerite did extensive genealogy research on her family tree as well as other families in Richmond County. She loved her family, even though she usually beat them in Scrabble, and enjoyed attending family reunions. She was a very good musician and enjoyed playing the piano and attending concerts.

Marguerite obtained the level of Life Master playing in duplicate bridge tournaments where she made many wonderful friends. She enjoyed playing and teaching bridge on cruise ships and traveled to many places around the world. She attended Presbyterian churches while living in Florida and for a time, attended Unity Presbyterian Church in Denver, N.C.

Marguerite is survived by her niece Ann H. Wilson and husband Roger of Denver, N.C.; nephew Jon B. Hutchinson and wife Ann of Rockwell, N.C.; two grand nieces Maria Russell (Kevin) and Joanna Preston (Jonathan); a great – grand niece Phoenix Preston and a great-grand nephew Isaac Russell. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Ralph Bennett Hutchinson.

Visitation for family and friends will be on Saturday, July 7th at Lady’s Funeral Home from 2 to 3 p.m. A memorial service and burial of cremated remains will take place at Green Lake United Methodist Church cemetery, Rockingham, N.C. at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Green Lake UMC (cemetery fund) in care of Rita Melton 215 Clearfield Dr. Rockingham, NC 28379.
