ROCKINGHAM — For the first 25 minutes of the contest, Lumberton was getting frustrated on offense as the team’s forwards were getting caught in an offsides trap by Richmond Senior.
Then things started to turn around in a big way. The Pirates scored three goals in less than five minutes en route to posting an 8-0 Southeastern Conference victory over the Raiders Wednesday night.
The win improves Lumberton to 8-1 overall and in second place behind Pinecrest in the SEC with a 2-1 mark, while Richmond falls to 4-3-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in league play.
“After a rough start we were able to start getting behind them pretty easily,” Lumberton coach Kenny Simmons said. “After that, they switched from a flat back to a sweeper. It was nice to score some goals tonight.”
The Pirates broke through in the 10-minute mark as Hancel Toban notched the first of her two tallies off a rebound in front of the Raiders’ goal. Then Lumberton found its rhythm as three players found the back of the net in a five-minute span. Michaela Nash scored the first of her two goals from a feed from Madison Britt. Less than a minute later, Britt ripped a shot past a diving Brittni Faurot for the first of her two markers. Toban closed out the stretch with a header off a corner kick.
“When a coach is coaching, you would hope the players would do what was being said,” Richmond coach Bennie Howard said. “We’re at a crossroads right now, if they want to listen to what we want them to do or if they are going to do what they want to do.”
The Raiders had a prime scoring opportunity to end the shutout in the waning moments of the first half when Alexie Coble was taken down just outside of the penalty area. Richmond was unable to convert the free kick as Lashonda York’s shot sailed high.
Richmond will return to action 7 p.m. Friday when it plays host to Overhills.
In the junior varsity contest, Holli Hayes scored the game’s only goal has Richmond claimed a 1-0 victory over Lumberton. Meredith McLean recorded the shutout.
