ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond Senior boys track team placed first in six events en route to capturing its first Southeastern Conference meet of the season over Hoke County and Lumberton Thursday afternoon.
The Raiders finished with 89 points, followed by the Bucks with 62 and the Pirates tallied 19.
Randy Altman was a double individual event winner, claiming the 800- and 1,600-meter runs. Erron Green was first in the 400-meter run. Raheem Bowden took first in the high jump and placed second in the long jump. Shydamion Ellerbe finished second in the triple jump.
The Raiders captured two relay events — the 4x200 and the 4x800. Tafari Rose, Travis Newton, Diquan Cox and Gus Chambers combined to win the 4x200, while Sean Thompson, Erron Green, Zack Paul and Altman teamed to win the 4x800.
“It was a good showing,” Richmond boys coach Reggie Miller said. “We are still improving and working hard. That’s all you can ask for.”
On the girls side, Richmond outdistanced the competition with 88 points. Hoke was second with 68, followed by Lumberton with 26.
Asiana Douglas took first in the triple jump, Belle Hillenburg won the 3,200-meter run and Morgan Tedder captured the 1,600-meter run.
Richmond’s 4x100 relay team of Dominique Ingram, Brianna Everett, Keyshawn Jones and CeCe McDonald took first as did the 4x800 squad of Ana Rivers, Cassie Smith, Hillenburg and Tedder.
“It was an outstanding way to open the season,” Richmond girls coach Phillip Waddell said. “The first track meet of the year, the first meet on the new track, I couldn’t ask for a better start. I’m very proud of the girls.”
Richmond will return to action 4 p.m. Thursday when it travels to Pembroke for a three-team meet with Pinecrest and Purnell Swett.
Lumberton edges Richmond in tennis
LUMBERTON — The Southeastern Conference tennis match between Richmond Senior and Lumberton came down to the third and final doubles contest.
After earning just two singles points against the Pirates, the Raiders stormed back to win the opening two doubles matchups and needed a victory in the last to earn the come-from-behind victory.
However, Lumberton’s team of Thomas Bailey and Drew Bollinger edged Richmond’s Gary Boyete and Logan Deese, 8-5, to give the Pirates a 5-4 win Thursday afternoon.
“It was down to the wire,” Richmond coach Paula York said. “It was a long match.”
In singles, Andrew Balzer and Brandon Ingram were the lone Richmond players to earn wins. Balzer downed Alec Dent, 6-3, 6-2, and Ingram stopped Trevor Franklin, 7-5, 6-2.
Balzer and Ingram teamed to defeat Isaac Bell and Franklin 8-5 in doubles, while Colt Auman and John Pittman combined to beat Jacob Risen and Dent, 8-3.
Richmond (3-2, 2-1) will return to the courts 4 p.m. Monday when East Montgomery visits Rockingham. The Eagles knocked off the Raiders, 6-3, earlier this season.
Ellerbe gets first win
ELLERBE — The Ellerbe Middle School baseball team earned its first win of the season with a 13-3 victory over Spring Hill Thursday afternoon. Nick Webb tossed a complete game, striking out 13. Damian King was 3-for-3 with an RBI-triple, while Webb added two hits in two at-bats. Ellerbe is now 1-3 on the year.
