Michael Wayne Smith is a Christian singer and songwriter from Oak Ridge, Tenn., and for the last few years has primarily been known in the gospel music industry for his songwriting efforts. Most notably, the song “My Home,” recorded by the group Heirline, was a number one song at many radio stations across the country in 2005 and now has become a standard in many churches today.
Smith will be performing at Sweet Haven Church on Sunday, located at 424 Midway Road, Rockingham. The performance will begin at 11 a.m. Smith said he sang in Rockingham one other time, earlier this year.
Although he has been singing and writing songs for years, it wasn’t until February 2008 that Smith fully surrendered to the Lord by accepting the call to begin traveling across the country and sharing the music God has placed in his heart, he said. With his family by his side, they have seen the ministry grow and have seen the favor of the Lord because of their obedience, according to Smith.
In October 2008, Smith released his first major recording, “Welcome Home,” through Church House Music. A few months later, he released his first radio single, “The Reason That I Sing.” This song is Smith’s theme song and he sings it everywhere he goes.
In October 2009, the second single, “Everything’s Fine,” was released to radio and quickly received overwhelming response by radio listeners everywhere, said Smith. Christian bookstores around the country began seeking out the virtually unknown singer of this song. This ultimately led to a distribution agreement with one of the largest Christian distributors in the country. Smith said the reason the song has done so well is because everyone can relate to it. Everyone gets bad news from time to time; everyone eventually faces a problem they simply can’t overcome by themselves. And, it’s only through Christ that our problems can be challenged and we can have victory, said Smith.
“The songs that I write are from experience I have had or that others have had that have impacted me,” said Smith. “I’m all about encouraging Christians. Everyone is going to go through storms.”
Smith said although he knows he will sing his popular songs at his performance, and does have a set list of songs, he is guided spiritually through his performance.
“I usually have a set, but I receive guidance,” said Smith. “We just like to let the Lord lead us once we take the stage.”
