With the weather warming up, what better way to celebrate the end of winter than with a catfish tournament.
On Saturday, March 16, Scotty’s Bait and Tackle will hold a catfish tournament on Blewett Falls Lake. The tournament will begin at daylight just outside of the no wake buoys at the Anson county boat ramp.
Sign up for the tournament will be at 5:30 a.m. at the boat ramp or at Scotty’s Bait and Tackle anytime before the tournament. The entry fee is $60 a boat.
There will be a first, second and third place pay-out. First place prize will win 50 percent of the money collected, second place will win 20 percent and third place will win 10 percent. The remaining 20 percent will go towards Back Pack Pals of Richmond County.
“Every tournament we have, we donate some of the money to charity,” said Scotty Huneycutt, owner of Scotty’s Bait and Tackle.
“He came up with the idea all on his own,” said Kim Lindsey, public relations director for Backpack Pals for Richmond County. “It think it’s a win-win for everybody. The fishermen have a great time and we receive money for Backpack Pals,” she said.
Huneycutt said he has been organizing tournaments for eight years.
This is a rod and reel tournament only, no jugs, trot lines or set hooks can be used and there is no limit on the number of rods that can be used. All fish must be alive to be weighed and all participants must be back with their fish ready to weigh-in at 3 p.m. There is no age restriction on the tournament.
This tournament will also help one Richmond Senior High School student complete his senior project. Andrew Fehlman is doing his senior project on cat fishing vs. bass fishing and will be helping Huneycutt with the tournaments in order to fulfill his 20 mentor hour requirement. Fehlman said he came up with the idea to help with the tournament because he likes the outdoors and fishing.
