Homeland Security Chairman Michael McCaul, U.S. Representative for Texas’s 10th Congressional District, announced on Jan. 4 that U.S. Rep. Richard Hudson, from North Carolina’s 8th District, will be appointed the Chairman of the Transportation Security Subcommittee.

In a statement regarding the committee agenda as well as the subcommittee chairmen and chairwomen for the 113th Congress, McCaul said the committee consists of a highly qualified team “committed to ensuring the Department of Homeland Security is capable of carrying out its core mission of protecting the homeland.”

The team will work to address what the committee has identified as the four major threats the country faces, McCaul said: International and domestic terrorism, unsecured borders, cyber attacks, and “the department’s dysfunctional management which continues to hinder security operations and cost taxpayers billions of dollars in waste.” The committee’s oversight of DHS will ensure both security and fiscal accountability to the American people, McCaul said.

“I want to extend my gratitude to Homeland Security Chairman McCaul for his leadership on the committee and for placing confidence in me to be the next Chairman of this important Subcommittee,” said Hudson. “Our nation faces a real challenge in strengthening the security of our transportation systems and I am committed to providing the proper oversight so we can continue to protect our travelers, job-creators, and commercial interests on a daily basis. I look forward to working together with the members of my subcommittee on an issue that is of primary importance to our nation’s security and prosperity,” he said.

McCaul stated further, “As Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, I will focus on facing both terrorist and natural disaster threats on several fronts, beginning with rigorous oversight of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). We must ensure that all DHS operations are effective and that taxpayer dollars are not mismanaged. Additionally, I will work to bolster our defenses against cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, enhance our border security and ensure that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) effectively protects travelers.”

McCaul also appointed Congresswoman Candice Miller (R-MI) for the subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, Congressman Peter King (R-NY) for the subcommittee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence, Congressman Patrick Meehan (R-PA) for the subcommittee on Cybersecurity, Infrastructure Protection and Security Technologies, Congresswoman Susan Brooks (R-IN) for the subcommittee on Emergency Preparedness, Response and Communications and Congressman Jeff Duncan (R-SC) for the subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency.
