Rev. Deborah Wilkins has accepted the pulpit at Hamlet First United Methodist Church, newly appointed by the North Carolina Conference of the Church.

A reception was held in her honor last Sunday. Rev. Wilkins is replacing retiring Pastor Ken Buckingham, who left the church at the end of October.

“It’s a routine thing,” said church member Robyn Sumpter. “We change ministers. They stay between a year and a few years.”

Sumpter said she has met Wilkins in person.

“We’re glad to have her, and we are sad our last pastor left,” said Sumpter. “Our last pastor had to take a leave of absence. He was ill. We usually change pastors in June or July. Wilkins came from another church, and the decision was made at the conference level.”

Sumpter said she has been going to the church for about 35 years.

Hamlet First United Methodist Church is located at 300 Charlotte St. in Hamlet. You can reach the church by calling 910-582-0078.
